An estimated 484,490 children aged 6-59 months are suffering or expected to suffer elevated levels of acute malnutrition between June 2024 and May 2025 – a figure that has more than doubled compared to the last IPC AMN analysis of 2022. This total includes 84,985 cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), which is significantly higher than those of 2022. About 72,980 pregnant or breastfeeding women (PBW) are also suffering or expected to suffer elevated levels of acute malnutrition in the same period. 

In the current analysis period (June to September 2024), the province of Cibitoke and the seven districts of Kirundo (Pce Kirundo), Makamba (Pce Makamba), Fota (Pce Mwaro), Bugarama and Rumongo (Pce Rumonge), Gisuru and Ruyigi (Pce Ruyigi) are all classified in IPC AMN Phase 3 (Serious). 

Over the projected period (October 2024 to May 2025), the nutritional situation will deteriorate with five districts likely to move into IPC AMN Phase 2 (Alert) and six into IPC AMN Phase 3 (Serious). 

Immediate/short-term response priorities: 

• Strengthen activities for the management of Acute Malnutrition at the level of health facilities (FOSA: SST and STA) and at the community level (FARN).
• Carry out active research for cases of malnutrition in the community and at the FOSA level.
• Promote good practices in improving children’s dietary intake and diversity food in women.
• Strengthen community management of childhood illnesses (IMCI), diarrhea, ARI and malaria at the household level by CHWs.

Immediate/short-term response priorities

• Promote the establishment of vegetable gardens and the breeding of small livestock at the household level.
• Strengthen actions to prevent malnutrition in a multi-sectoral framework.
• Make multisectoral food security and nutrition platforms operational at all levels.
• Strengthen the population's resilience to shocks.
