Nearly 1.2 million people in Burundi are expected to face high levels of acute food insecurity between June and September 2024 (harvest season), including 122,000 people in Emergency (IPC Phase 4) and one million people in Crisis (IPC Phase 3). The situation is slightly improved from the current period (April – May 2024), as a result of positive agricultural performance and the increase in food stocks at the household level.
The people facing high levels of acute food insecurity are mainly rural households that are highly dependent on markets and who derive their income from rare and low-paying opportunities such as agricultural labour, families affected by climatic hazards (floods, attacks parasitic, etc.) and the families of returnees who have not yet restarted their means of subsistence because of their low purchasing power.
