Around 17.2 million Afghans (40 per cent) are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity, classified in Crisis or Emergency (IPC Phase 3 or 4) in April 2023. This includes nearly 3.4 million people (around 8 per cent) experiencing Emergency (IPC Phase 4) levels of food insecurity. Between May and October 2023 a slight seasonal improvement is expected, with the number of people in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) or above likely decreasing to around 15.3 million, including just under 2.8 million people experiencing Emergency (IPC Phase 4).
