In July 2015, the Global Food Security Cluster (GFSC-WFP HQ) organized an IPC Level 1 Training for the Somalia Food Security Cluster in Nairobi.

The objectives of the training were to ensure that officials acquire IPC Level 1 Certification as IPC Analysts (i.e. IPC Practitioners acquire and prove understanding and knowledge of IPC Technical standards, protocols and guidelines). The training targeted Heads of Agencies and Technical Officers from UN Agencies and international NGOs based in Somalia; Kenya, South Sudan and Sudan.

The Workshop was opened by the GFSC- WFP HQ Programme Advisor who iterated that IPC is increasingly becoming recognized by decision makers and donors as an effective, reliable and standardized tool for food security analysis and reporting. IPC results are used by donors in the region for policy and strategic plans. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to build the capacity of officers and analysts in the Somalia Food Security Cluster. This will enable them to become certified IPC Level 1 Analysts.

The training was well received by participants as well as the Somalia Food Security Cluster Coordinator and the GFSC-WFP HQ Programme Advisor. The participants were encouraged to become IPC Level 1 and 2 certified and be part of a national and global pool of practitioners that can lead national trainings and analyses, and can participate in international opportunities. The training concluded with several participants completing the IPC online test towards the IPC Level 1 certification.
