This projection update on the food security situation in Honduras revises the earlier projection for the period from August to October 2026, covering all 18 departments and the Central District. The update was undertaken to assess the impact of several worsening factors, including the effects of El Niño, crop losses, the depletion of food reserves, sustained increases in prices, and declining household incomes.

The updated projection estimates that around 1.88 million people (18 percent of the population analysed) are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above), representing an increase of 108,500 people compared with the previous projection. The deterioration is concentrated in eight departments, including six departments of the Dry Corridor. Within the population classified in IPC Phase 3 or above, an estimated 104,800 people are in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency), which is characterised by large food gaps.

• Prioritise emergency food assistance and response interventions in municipalities placed under red and yellow alerts by the Government, within departments classified in IPC Phase 3 and 4, with the aim of reducing food consumption gaps and preventing further deterioration of the nutritional status of affected populations.
• Mobilise and coordinate humanitarian assistance, support mechanisms for smallholder farmers, and very short-term projects that enable an immediate response, helping to reduce food consumption gaps and strengthen the livelihoods of populations facing IPC Phase 3 and 4 conditions.
• Design interventions in coordination with development partners, municipalities, and the central Government to provide cash transfers, agricultural inputs, or short-term assistance packages that help mitigate the effects of the crisis and improve the livelihoods of affected communities. These measures should contribute to reducing food consumption gaps among populations in IPC Phase 3 and 4, preventing a further deterioration of their situation and protecting lives.
• Monitor the key drivers considered in the update of the second projected estimate to assess their evolution and impacts, particularly those related to the El Niño phenomenon, crop losses, and the depletion of food reserves.
