Overview:
Around 747,339 children are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition during the year 2018 based on the results of the SMART survey carried out in August 2017. Two regions in Mali (Timbuktu and Gao) are classified in Critical (IPC AMN Phase 4) with critical MAG P/T levels in Z-score according to the acute malnutrition classification tool of the CPI. Two other regions (Bamako and Kayes) are in Serious (IPC AMN Phase 3), with several pockst in the regions having extremely critical levels of acute malnutrition. Although the levels of acute malnutrition in both regions are expected to improve over the October 2017 to February 2018 projection period, they are more likely to be at Serious levels which requires an urgent response. The main factors contributing to the acute malnutrition situtaion include, very poor food quality (Minimum Acceptable Diversity: <5%) and a relatively high disease prevalence (above 20%). Additionally, the consequences of security crises in some areas also worsens the acute malnutrition situation. Also to note in this analysis, the anemia levels in all age groups (up to 80% of 6-59 months) are alarming.
