Technical Development

The IPC multi-agency partnership leads the technical development of protocols for classification of food insecurity and malnutrition through global working groups. The IPC Global Support Unit coordinates, chairs and documents recommendations from the working groups. Currently, there are two working groups: Food Security Working Group and Nutrition Working Group. Combined meetings between the two groups are frequently held and called Harmonization Meetings.

The IPC Technical Development is guided by the following principles:

• To be generic enough to be utilized in a vast array of food security and nutrition situations and livelihood systems;

• To be simple enough to be practical in the field and understood by multiple stakeholders; and

• To be rigorous enough to meet international standards.

Over the last years the following have been produced:

• IPC Technical Manual v2.0: Focus on classification of Acute Food Insecurity (2012);

• Addendum to IPC Technical Manual v2.0: Protocols for IPC Chronic Food Insecurity (2015/2016);

• Addendum to IPC Technical Manual v2.0: Protocols for IPC Acute Malnutrition (2016); and

• Various guidance notes.
