The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to face a severe food security crisis amid persistent conflict in the east, large-scale population displacement, and the expansion of Ebola, alongside climate and economic shocks. Between September and December 2026, 28.8 million people (23 percent of the population analysed) are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above), including 3.6 million people in Emergency (IPC Phase 4).
Worsening conditions in the east and northeast, particularly in North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri, have offset slight improvements in other parts of the country. An estimated 10.4 million people are in Phase 3 and above in these three provinces, with 3 million people facing Emergency (Phase 4) conditions.
The situation is projected to worsen between January and June 2027, with 30.3 million people expected to face Phase 3 or above, including 4.2 million people in Phase 4. Continued conflict, Ebola, El Niño-related flooding, high prices and declining humanitarian assistance are expected to further increase food security needs.
