The objectives of the assessment were 1) to ascertain the impact of the food production shortfall from the 2009/10 season on the livelihoods and food and nutrition security among the populations in Local Government Authorities (LGAs) previously identified by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives (MAFC), Ministry of Livestock development and Fisheries (MLDF), USAID Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) and other food security and [...]
Sustained deterioration in food security after a succession of poor or failed seasons that began in 2007 has been reversed significantly, after improved short rains in many parts of the severely drought-affected pastoral and marginal agricultural areas. In addition, the October – December 2009 short rains extended into January and February 2010 in some drought-affected areas in the northwest and southeast. Generally, a higher than average short rains farm output [...]

The rains received were above normal for many parts of the country resulting in improved crop production levels, thus increased food availability. Abundant rainfall also favored pasture and water availability for livestock in the [...]
Aid agencies and donors have warned of the possibility of a famine in Niger, evoking images of the last food crisis in the Sahelian country in 2005. Some media organizations have already pronounced the current crisis a famine. So, what exactly is a famine?
The report demonstrates a significant reverse of sustained deterioration of food security after successive poor or failed rainfall seasons since 2007. It illustrates increased crop production, livestock products, and water availability in most of the predominant food insecure areas mainly attributable to the above normal rainfall recorded in the reporting period. The population under HE and AFLC has drastically reduced. ...
