Tajikistan

The IPC was first piloted in Tajikistan in 2007 by the Tajikistan Food Coordination Forum, and WFP, in its position as IPC Global Partner, through an ECHO-funded project.

The IPC Tajikistan Technical Working Group (TWG) is constituted within the Tajikistan Food Coordination Forum, and members include: the Tajikistan Ministry of Economics, FAO, UNICEF, WFP, Oxfam, Save the Children, Agha Khan Foundation, Mission East, Action Against Hunger, and others. The Government (in particular through the Food Security Unit in the Ministry of Agriculture) is playing a leading role in the IPC process, with proper inclusion of other national partners, in particular the UN and NGOs. In its position as IPC Global Partner, WFP is acting as technical secretariat and coordinates technical assistance with the IPC Global Support Unit.

The IPC in Tajikistan is made possible through the active participation of the Government of Tajikistan, the technical support of the IPC Global Partners and financial support of ECHO and the Canadian Government.

IPC analysis results in Tajikistan are disseminated, in particular through cooperation with the UNDP/DRMP (Disaster Risk Management Project) that has included IPC analysis results in their monthly bulletins, prepared jointly with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and shared with partners. In particular in 2012, when food insecurity became severe due to high food and fuel prices and a difficult winter, ECHO provided around €800,000 for immediate support to areas classified in IPC phases 4 and 3, for interventions led by WFP, ACTED, and Mercy Corps. Other actors, including the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent Society, use the IPC results as a basis for their interventions.

At the moment, there are no IPC activities planned or under way in Tajikistan.
