IPC Acute Malnutrition Classification

The IPC Acute Malnutrition (IPC AMN) classification provides key information for decision makers that focuses on short- to long-term objectives to decrease acute malnutrition. Additionally, together with the IPC Acute Food Insecurity classification, the IPC Acute Malnutrition classification also provides information on acute food insecurity, making IPC an inclusive classification system to inform both acute food insecurity and acute malnutrition. In particular, the IPC Acute Malnutrition classification provides:

  • Guidelines for classification of areas in terms of prevalence of Global Acute Malnutrition, providing global thresholds for Weight for Height Z-score (WHZ) and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC);
  • Estimations of number of children acutely malnourished – providing numbers by WHZ, MUAC, and/or both;
  • Classification of areas in terms of severity of acute malnutrition; and
  • Identification of key drivers of acute malnutrition.

IPC Acute Malnutrition classification is conducted according to the four functions of the IPC, including: 1) consensus building, 2) methodical evaluation, review and convergence of all evidence available against global thresholds, 3) strategic communication for action, and 4) Quality Assurance.
