On 20th of May 2015, the IPC Global Steering Committee will hold the 3rd annual IPC Global Event, in the framework of the EXPO Milano 2015. The Event will be hosted by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (EC-JRC) in Ispra, Italy.

The overall theme of the EXPO Milano 2015 is Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. This theme runs through all the events organized both inside and outside the main exhibition site in Milan. In this context, the IPC Global Event represents an important opportunity to showcase IPC's contribution to the global challenges of feeding the planet. Discussions will focus on the new IPC Chronic Food Insecurity and Acute Malnutrition Classification tools, and on the analysis of potential uses of these for improved integrated food and nutrition programming and policy. Both these new IPC tools are laying the foundation for the consolidation of a fully Integrated Food and Nutrition Security Phase Classification System within the next three years.

Participants will include representatives of global IPC stakeholders, partner and donor agencies, Regional Inter-government Bodies (CILSS, IGAD, SADC, SAARC and SICA), and relevant food security organizations along with the national Government representatives that participated in the first phase of the roll-out of the IPC-Chronic Classification and the piloting of the prototype IPC Acute Malnutrition Classification.

The IPC Global Event will start with the presentation of key cross-country findings of the first round of IPC Chronic food insecurity analysis outcomes. The morning session will include also a panel discussion on the experiences of the countries that participated in the first round of the IPC-Chronic roll-out (Burundi, Nepal, Philippines and Uganda).

The afternoon session will focus on the presentation of the prototype IPC Acute Malnutrition Classification and learning from first round of country pilots. In particular, Government representatives from Bangladesh, Kenya and South Sudan will share their experiences of applying these tools in their countries as well as future plans to use the findings in country programming and policy.

The day will conclude with a discussion around IPC Regional Partners’ perspectives on the progress achieved in the framework of the IPC Global Strategic Programme (2014-2018) and plans for the next three years.

The outcomes of the event will be reviewed during the IPC Global Steering Committee Meeting, which will take place on May 21, 2015 and will include a Special Partners' Session in the morning. The Meeting aims at reflecting on achievements of the new IPC Global Strategic Programme (2014-2018) and discussing priority strategic direction and action plan on the way forward.

IPC Showcase

IPC information material, including the new IPC Global Briefs Series, information on the IPC Global Governance Structure, IPC GSU and Regional/Country activities, will be made available at the site of the event. Furthermore, the EC-JRC Visitors’ Center exhibit area will be dedicated to the EXPO Milano 2015 and to IPC. The exhibition will be open to the public and ongoing throughout and beyond the IPC Global Event.
