Description

Introduction of IPC into the Asian region is part of a global process facilitated by the Inter-agency Global IPC Initiative and guided by the IPC Global Steering Committee. The IPC initiative is committed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of response and to strengthen existing mechanism for disaster preparedness, early warning, and risk reduction in the food security sector.

With technical support from the Global Support Unit (GSU); FAO and WFP jointly organized a regional IPC awareness event in Bangkok in November 2010 that was attended by representatives of ASEAN, the IPC partners and other development partners and donors including ECHO and USAID. This event provided a detailed overview of IPC with best practices from other parts of the world. IPC also stimulated ideas, thoughts and interest among the relevant partners on the need for and best use of IPC for the Asian region. Similar awareness raising events were organized in Cambodia and Lao PDR in November 2010. The participants of these events included a wide range of stakeholders including different government agencies and development partner organizations (eg: UN, IFI’s, NGO’s) and raised high quality discussions and positive feedback.
