Burundi: Current Acute Food Insecurity Situation July-September 2016

Description

19% of population, about 1.46 million people, are estimated to be severely food insecure (phase 3 & 4 of IPC) and are in need of humanitarian assistance. The cross-border trade and movement with Tanzania, the rising prices of basic foodstuffs and water deficit during the 2016B season are the main factors driving the food insecurity deterioration.

 

Due to the same factors, the “Dépression de l'Est” region has moved from Stressed (IPC Phase 2) into Crisis (IPC Phase 3). The Bweru region (East Dry Lands) is also classified to be in Crisis (IPC phase 3) which production in 2016B season fell 17% and 30% respectively compared to the 2015B crop and the average of B seasons of the four recent years (2012 to 2015), the decrease in domestic production being 0.8% compared with 2015B.  

 

Also, some municipalities (Nyabiraba, Isare, Kabezi Mutambu and Kanyosha) of “Crete Congo Nil” region surrounding Bujumbura are classified in IPC Phase 3. In addition to rising food prices, many households have not yet recovered the income opportunities due to the security disturbances that have prevailed since April 2015.

 

The rest of the country is classified to be in Stressed (IPC Phase 2), with some risk factors to monitor as the rising prices, the weather, the population’s movements and cross-border trade, plant pests and diseases.
