The Tri-national Border Federation of Río Lempa (Mancomunitad Trinacional Fronteriza Río Lempa) is a Public Law entity, located in the Trifinio Region and composed of municipalities of three countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. This report contains the results of the analysis carried out in February 2018 in seven microregions of the Tri-national Border Federation of Río Lempa according to the approach of the IPC Acute Food Insecurity scale, which aims to classify the severity and define the phase of food insecurity of the territories and / or communities making use of information of various kinds in order to support evidence-based decisions. The IPC helps resolve concerns about which areas are facing food insecurity, who it affects, how many people, and how serious is the situation, guiding what should be done and when.

In the analyzed period (February-May 2018), out of an analyzed population of 357 thousand people in the seven microregions of Cayaguanca and Santa Ana (El Salvador); SensentiSesecapa and Guisayote (Honduras); and Chorti and Güija (Guatemala):

  • More than half of the population analyzed (around 191,000 people) is classified in Minimal food insecurity (IPC Phase 1)
  • Around 142,000 people (40% of the analyzed population) are classified as Stressed (IPC Phase 2).
  • Nearly 24,000 (7%) in are classified in Crisis (IPC Phase 3): about 19,500 in the Chorti microregion, and about 4,000 in Güija.

These conditions are associated with the fact that food consumption is limited in certain areas.

In the projected period from June to August 2018 is set to worsen with the population classified in Crisis (IPC Phase 3) set to grow to 52 thousand people (15% of the analyzed population). The population facing Minimal food insecurity (IPC Phase 1) is set to be 185 thousand people (52% of the analyzed population) and the population classified as Stressed (IPC Phase 2) is set to be 120 thousand people (33% of the analyzed population).
