Following a regional technical training workshop held in Abidjan in June 2007, the Côte d’Ivoire was the first West African country to implement the IPC.
At the
end of August 2007, the IPC approach and the IPC guidelines were presented to a wide audience in the Côte d’Ivoire.
In October 2007, the country released the first results and a map under the coordination of the IPC working group. The latter is a sub-group of the national Food Security and Nutrition Working Group and includes staff from international NGO’s, donor agencies and four key national ministries:
- Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI)
- Ministry of Livestock Production and Fishing Resources (MIPARH)
- Ministry of Health (MINESANTE) and its National Nutrition Programme (PNN)
- Ministry of Trade and its Office for Food Crops Trade Support (OCPV)
The IPC has proved instrumental in providing critical information on the food security situation and levels of risk. In the first IPC exercise, the Côte d’Ivoire was classified as being in phase 1 and 2.
Next steps for the further development of the IPC in the Côte d’Ivoire include:
- addressing data gaps;
- improving data collection efforts;
- determining livelihood zones;
- institutionalizing the IPC; and
- adapting the IPC in urban areas (Abidjan, Bouaké, San Pedro, etc.)
