In 2007, WFP has conducted pilot exercises in
Cambodia,
Indonesia and
Sri Lanka in order to contribute to the adaptation of the IPC approach outside of
Great Horn of Africa region. Further objectives were to:
identify possible links between the IPC and other food security analysis, assessment and monitoring/early warning tools (WFP’s EFSAs, CFSVAs and FSMS) with the goal of adopting a standardized approach; and
provide further inputs on how to improve the IPC for standardizing situation and response analysis.
The IPC pre-pilot in Indonesia was conducted by WFP between December 2006 and January 2007. It included an initial awareness phase involving the Government (e.g. Ministry of Health) and research institutions, whose studies and databases were used.
Most of the country was classified as either “generally food secure” or “chronically food insecure”. Emphasis was placed on the nature and causes of this classification, in particular by considering access to food and food utilisation. A series of recommendations for improving technical and process issues related to future IPC applications related were made. A map was also produced.
